According to the well-informed Wall Street Journal Apple is currently working on an iPhone that is half the size of the iPhone 4 and a major MobileMe overhaul for release this summer. The report is following up on Bloomberg’s report about a smaller iPhone but adds some new details such as the device’s “N97″ codename and size.

The WSJ also claims the new, smaller iPhone will be available “at about half the price of Apple’s main line of iPhones.” The smaller iPhone is said to be sold alongside Apple’s main line of phones so maybe this summer’s lineup will be the iPhone 5 at $199/$299, iPhone 4 at $99 and iPhone nano at $49. This new iPhone will be lighter and will have an “edge-to-edge” screen (no home button?!), and  have voice-based navigation

The report also claims Apple is “exploring a major overhaul of its MobileMe online storage service.” MobileMe is said to become a free “locker” for all of your personal media like photos and videos. This would allow Apple to provide less physical storage on their mobile devices and pull all your media from the cloud. They also claim the new MobileMe revamp was due for release last year and will allow users to stream their iTunes libraries to their phones so they won’t need to actually sync through the iTunes desktop application. The report also says Apple is working on an update to their main iPhone (iPhone 4) and Steve Jobs declined to comment via email.

Perhaps this is Apple’s North Carolina data center’s true purpose in life. The report also claims MobileMe could tie into Apple’s rumored cloud-based music service. Steve Jobs said in a customer email that MobileMe would get a lot better this year.

On a final note, the report claims that both products are tracking summer 2011 launches (probably a WWDC launch) and Steve Jobs has made them his top priority. There will possibly more details about this story, so be sure to check back later today for updates.

It’s definitely not as big and as old an Apple rumor as the Verizon iPhone was, but we’ve heard speculation about Apple releasing a second, smaller iPhone “nano,” just like they did for the iPod.

We’re hearing this rumor again thanks to Bloomberg, who reports that sources familiar with the matter, confirmed to them that Apple is prepping a second, smaller iPhone:

One version would be cheaper and smaller than the most recent iPhone, said a person who has seen a prototype and asked not to be identified because the plans haven’t been made public. Apple also is developing technology that makes it easier to use the iPhone on multiple wireless networks, two people said.

Apparently cheaper, or about $200 without a contract, this new handset would be aimed at Android, which is available in many different form factors, and is often cheaper than the iPhone. Apparently it’s not a done deal:

While Apple has aimed to unveil the device near mid-year, the introduction may be delayed or scrapped, the person said. Few Apple employees know the details of the project, the person said. Apple often works on products that do not later get released.

The prototype was about one-third smaller than the iPhone 4, said the person, who saw it last year.

Bloomberg’s story goes on and rehashes many other rumors we’ve been hearing, such as the universal SIM and dual GSM/CDMA capability.

All in all, this sounds really fishy. We know that Apple doesn’t even want to release a smaller iPad, as apparently the user experience is poor on smaller screens. We’d believe the same thing applies to smart phones. Yet, HP/Palm recently released a smaller form factor smart phone, so who knows, maybe that’s where the industry is going?

Apple has relaunched its entire website with a new design using HTML5, adding a darker, glossy navigation bar and speedy new animated page layouts for Mac and iPod pages.

The redesign officially upgrades the site from “HTML 4.01 Transitional” to the latest HTML5, enabling such elements as a dynamically resized search field in the navigation bar that enlarges to accommodate search terms, as well as adding richer support for mobile features.

The new Mac section debuts a new “product slider” interface, which animates a series of icons depicting the families of Mac products, Apple’s desktop applications, accessories, and server related products.

A similarly animated iPod section presents iPod models and accessories, as well as a panel of “iTunes and more,” which includes links to download iTunes, purchase gift cards, and special sections for Nike+iPod, (Product)RED, MobileMe, and headphones.

Apple goes HTML5

Apple has been a big proponent of HTML5, with the company’s supported WebKit open source project not only working to follow the specification but actively contributing toward it as well.

Last week, the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) introduced a new HTML5 logo (depicted above) intended to promote visibility of the next generation of web technologies now being rolled out in modern browsers, using the “HTML5″ brand to refer both to the HTML5 specification itself as well as serving as a “general-purpose visual identity for a broad set of open web technologies, including CSS, SVG, WOFF and others.”

This announcement was received with scorn by many web purists who were upset that the public might be further confused by the semantic and technical blurring of simplified branding, rather than knowing the actual role played by each different web technology. This prompted the W3C to restate that the new logo “represents HTML5, the cornerstone for modern Web applications.”

HTML5?

Within the same news cycle, the Web Hypertext Application Technology Working Group (WHATWG), a team designated by the W3C to maintain the emerging HTML5 specification, announced that it would now be referring to HTML5 as simply HTML, because the specification would now be regarded as a “living specification” that constantly evolves, rather than being a designated version number going through a much more formal process of drafts and recommendations.

This change erupted in more controversy from those who saw it as either a feud between the two groups or a simply a confusing miscommunication on overall strategy. However, the HTML5 brand actually has little to do with the way HTML is presented as a specification.

Additionally, those complaining about the lack of an ongoing version number seem to assume that the WHATWG is compiling a specification that browser makers follow. In reality, such an effort would fail just as many other attempts by standards bodies to tell the industry how to work have, including the ISO’s Open Systems Interconnection (OSI) protocol suite (rejected in favor of the industry lead and more practical TCP/IP) or the W3C’s own XHTML 2.0, an intellectual exercise maintained between 2002 and 2009 and virtually ignored by browser makers.

When the W3C started over to create a more practical, precise and functional new version of HTML, it began working closely with Apple, Mozilla, Opera, Google, Microsoft and the parties to make sure the standard reflected what vendors wanted to and were willing to do, rather than trying to mandate impractical ideas that would never be supported by the browsers people actually used.

It’s Already Been Broughten!

The result, HTML5, was originally scheduled to publish a “candidate recommendation” by 2012, with at least two “100% complete and fully interoperable implementations.” Ian Hickson, editor of the HTML5 specification, once said HTML5 was likely to be finished around 2022. These dates were frequently used by opponents of portions of HTML5, including Flash maker Adobe, to create fear, uncertainty and doubt about whether HTML5 would ever be completed, with the suggestion that everyone should just remain content with using Flash to build dynamic content.

The new shift in viewing HTML5 as simply the latest iteration of HTML means there’s no reason to wait around for perfect compliance from every browser, something that still has yet to happen for even the decade old HTML 4.01. Instead, it motivates browser makers and web developers to use the specification that now exists to build real products, constantly evolving both along with the specification to deliver the best technologies as they become available.

Do you have the appetite for two more Matrix films? For me the answer to that question would hinge on whether the new movies were more like the first film or the latter two. Regardless, there’s some vague chance we might see more movies in the series. While appearing at the London School of the Performing Arts, Keanu Reeves said he recently met with the Wachowskis, who have written a treatment for two more Matrix movies.

Before we get into the Matrix news, Keanu Reeves also said that the Robin Hood re-telling Hood was still in the works from the Wachowskis and that Will Smith had agreed to star, as per previous reports. And he says that Bill and Ted 3 is actively moving along and that he’s committed to it. Now for the Matrix.

Here’s what the actor said in London, via an email sent to AICN:

Says he met the Wachowski’s (no emphasis on the word brothers), for lunch over Christmas and stated that they had completed work on a two picture script treatment that would see him return to the world of the matrix as Neo. Says the brothers have met with Jim Cameron to discuss the pro’s and con’s of 3D and are looking to deliver something which has never been seen again. keanu stated that he still has an obligation to the fans to deliver a movie worthy of the title “The Matrix” and he swears this time that the treatment will truly revolutionise the action genre like the first movie. Wachowski’s are working on a movie called “Cloud Atlas” at the moment, once that concludes they will talk again.

If you’re a celebrity who owns a fantastical ranch full of spaceship paraphernalia, chances are you have a passing relationship with reality, anyway. Unfortunately, it turns out George Lucas and reality are barely even acquaintances, as Seth Rogen just revealed that Mr. Lucas allegedly holds a sincere belief in Mayan apocalypse lore. Funnier yet: Steven Spielberg is pretty annoyed about it.

In a new Toronto Sun article, Rogen explains that a meeting with Lucas and Spielberg soured once the subject turned to Mayan calendar drama.

“George Lucas sits down and seriously proceeds to talk for around 25 minutes about how he thinks the world is gonna end in the year 2012, like, for real. He thinks it.

“He’s going on about the tectonic plates and all the time Spielberg is, like, rolling his eyes, like, ‘My nerdy friend won’t shut up, I’m sorry…’

“I first thought he (Lucas) was joking… and then I totally realized he was serious and then I started thinking, ‘If you’re George Lucas and you actually think the world is gonna end in a year, there’s no way you haven’t built a spaceship for yourself… So I asked him… ‘Can I have a seat on it?’

“He claimed he didn’t have a spaceship, but there’s no doubt there’s a Millennium Falcon in a garage somewhere with a pilot just waiting to go… It’s gonna be him and Steven Spielberg and I’ll be blown up like the rest of us.”

Jar-jarring stuff. But, not so surprising, right? I’m sure he sleeps in a Brian Wilson sandbox full of moon rocks, too. Authenticity is important in a sci-fi auteur!

We just got some pretty wild information from one of our Apple sources and while it’s hard to believe at first, it does make sense. We have exclusively been told that the reason Apple just added multitouch gestures for the iPad in the latest iOS 4.3 beta is because the iPad will be losing the home button. Yes, we are told that Apple, at some point in time, will remove the home button from the iPad’s design. Instead of button taps, you will use new multitouch gestures to navigate to the home screen and also to launch the app switcher.

That’s not all, however. In addition to the home button disappearing from the iPad, we’re told that this change will make its way over to the iPhone as well. Our source said Apple employees are already testing iPads and iPhones with no home buttons on the Apple campus, and it’s possible we will see this new change materialize with the next-generation iPad and iPhone devices set to launch this year.

Additionally, we’re told Apple’s popular photo-taking application, Photo Booth, will be appearing on the next iPad. It’s also very possible that we’ll see iLife apps for iOS unveiled around the iPad 2 release as well.

It has been said that Steve Jobs didn’t want any physical buttons on the original iPhone at first, and it looks like he may soon get his wish.

“The Henley Royal Regatta were incredibly good to us and they allowed us to actually shoot the race at Henley. I had no idea how huge the Henley Royal Regatta was. I’d only seen photographs and a lot of them are telephoto so you don’t get the idea of this mile-and-a-half of grandstands and corporate sponsors. I mean, it’s a huge thing and we originally thought we would shoot a bunch of inserts on the Charles [River] and then use that footage to intercut with wide shots we’d shot at Henley.

“The trick of this scene, and the thing that made it so difficult was, it’s not like the fight in Rocky where it’s been talked about forever and it’s importance has been established and you know what it means to the Winklevosses. You get dropped into the middle of this race, and I joked with Aaron [Sorkin] about it a lot, ‘How do I make people care about whether or not these guys win or lose a race that we don’t know where it is, we don’t know what it means?’ And he was like, ‘Well that’s your problem.’ [laughing]

“He was using it as a way of saying, ‘You miss by that much.’ Then to have the Winklevosses miss by that much with Mark Zuckerberg, they missed by that much with Larry Summers, they’re missing by that much at Henley and it’s the final straw.

“But it is a tricky thing to design a sequence around missing by that much when you literally get dropped into the middle of it. You really don’t know where you are, it requires a subtitle to tell you you’re now in Henley for the Henley Royal Regatta, which you probably don’t know is the Super Bowl of boat racing.

“So this was one of those sequences where the only time we could shoot it was July 4, 2010. It was literally five to six weeks before we had to finish the movie. The movie had to be done so we could get it in theaters, and they were incredibly helpful to us and made it all possible.

“We’d shot the post-Henley scene where they hear about Facebook, but the actual race itself was literally a one-minute-and-forty-second slug. I think when we showed the film to the New York Film Festival, where we showed the film to a lot of long-lead press it had a card that just said, ‘Incredibly involving and thrilling sequence at Henley Royal Regatta,’ that was it just a black card with white type on it. So when we finally got to shoot the scene it was a mad scramble to finish it.

“One of the reasons it was done in this faux, swing and tilt– tilting lens board style was because all of the close-ups of the Winklevosses and the Dutch rowing were done in Eton on a man made lake that doesn’t look anything like Henley. Doesn’t have any– just has green grass, but we would shoot the close-ups of all the people and then we had to matte in still photographs that we’d shot at Henley.

“There was a team of 20-35 artists who toiled around the clock to finish that sequence so we could get it out and get the movie done. And they did a great job.”

Inception

• Revealing mistakes: Early in the movie, when Saito is asking Cobb and Arthur to attempt the inception, Cobb and Arthur are standing outside Saito’s helicopter speaking to Saito. The rotor blades are spinning and the engine is running but there is no air moved over the two characters; their hair and clothes remain unmoved. (In the wider angle which follows, with the helicopter and the actors in the same shot, the wind is affecting them.)
• Continuity: When the cab gets hit the first time the front grille with the Hyundai logo gets smashed in and disappears. In the second scene the grille reappears and the car has less damage than the scene before. And in the warehouse scene the grille disappears one final time.
• Continuity: When the white van emerges from the warehouse, the passenger side mirror strikes the warehouse door. However, in the next shot of van’s exterior the passenger side mirror is fully extended. In subsequent shots the mirror is flipped back once more.
• Continuity: In the scene with the falling van, the sleeping Arthur is shown without the headphones originally placed on his head. Before the van hits the water, he’s wearing the headphones again.
• Continuity: One car explosion shown twice. First is the shot of the car exploding in a fireball, filling the frame. Minutes later the same car is shown exploding in the same fireball, but as part of a bigger shot from further away, in the bottom half of the frame.
• Continuity: When Cobb and Ariadne are sitting at a café, her hand movements from shot to shot are out of sync, as she adjusts her hair or picks up her coffee cup.
• Continuity: In the scene where Eames is chasing down the Hummer with skiers trailing behind it, the number of skiers on the ropes alternates between five and six in different shots.
• Continuity: When Arthur collects Cobb in Tokyo, they leave the hotel room and go to the roof for the helicopter – it is clearly at night. When they are on the roof, it is already daylight.
• Continuity: When Cobb first meets Miles, there’s a hair on Cobb’s right shoulder that appears and reappears between cuts.
• Continuity: In the scene where Saito enters the helicopter and informs Cobb about the inception plan. In one shot, there is hard rain hitting the window in the helicopter. However, in a subsequent shot, there is no rain outside.
• Continuity: In the scenes where Arthur and Ariadne are looking at the hotel rooms in the second layer of dreams, Ariadne’s bun keeps moving back and forth on her head. (In one scene, it is on top of her head, in the next, it is near the back, then moves up again.)
• Crew or equipment visible: When Fischer’s cab is being hijacked, numerous production markings are visible on the street.
• Continuity: In the scene where Saito is defending Fischer, the ventilation cover is open after they enter through it, but closed when Saito is sitting next to it. The cover is open again when Saito throws the grenade into the ventilation shaft.
• Continuity: In the first scene, when the guard says “he had only these”, and places Cobb’s gun and totem on the table, the totem is tilted with the longer end up and it is stable enough not to fall down. When Cobb is brought in, the totem is lying stable, with its long end down and short end up.
• Errors in geography: When the characters are riding the JR Shinkansen (bullet train), Cobb says that he needs to get off in Kyoto. In the next scene, there is an aerial view of Tokyo, not Kyoto. The red-colored Tokyo Tower can be seeing in that scene and also in the rooftop scene the following morning where they board the helicopter.
• Revealing mistakes: At the beginning and end of the film when Cobb meets Saito in limbo, the full-eye contacts to make Leonardo DiCaprio’s and ‘Ken Watanabe”s eyes look glossy and bloodshot are visible in the close-up shots.
• Continuity: During the scene where Ariadne and Cobb are sitting at a café a man in a yellow jacket passes by behind Ariadne. The camera then switches to Cobb. When it switches back to Ariadne you can see that the man in the background passes here once again,
• Factual errors: At one point in the third dream, Saito is seen throwing a frag grenade down a vent and it explodes into fire. Frag grenades do not do that, they explode into fragments; incendiary grenades explode into fire, and they look quite different from frag grenades.
• Revealing mistakes: When the team busts into room 491 in the hotel, the door opens fractionally before Cobb’s foot hits it in the POV shot.
• Continuity: In the warehouse scene between Cobb and Ariadne, a Nikon DSLR camera is behind him on a desk. It disappears and reappears between shots.
• Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Saito is the CEO of a large competitor to Fischer’s corporation, however Fischer does not appear to recognize or acknowledge Saito both in his dream or on the plane.
• Plot holes: While the van is falling, it’s said that Arthur only have a couple of minutes to synchronize the kick; however, this time wouldn’t enough to realize all the actions performed by Arthur (tie the dreamers together, beat the guards, call the elevator, cut the cables, put the bombs and explode them).
• Continuity: When Arthur is tying up the team in the hotel scene, you see that Eames’ arms are tightly bound to his sides by the cord. When Arthur is pushing them down the corridors, Eames’ arms are now floating freely. Then, when we see the view looking down into the elevator, his arms are once again bound tightly.
• Continuity: In the Kyoto hotel room scene, Cobb lies his pistol on a coffee table before answering his door. After he lets Arthur into the room, the pistol is no longer on the table, but Cobb removes the pistol from his belt then places it into his bag.
• Incorrectly regarded as goofs: The immigration form Cobb is given in the plane towards the end of the movie is the white I-94 form given to those coming to the US on a visa. While it’s true that US citizens need only fill out a smaller blue customs declaration form, Cobb clearly declines the form.
• Plot holes: When in a dream, time passes 20x slower, so 10 hours on the plane translates to 7 days on the first dream level, which translates to 6 months on the second. The explanation given for this is that outside of a dream you are only using 5% of your brain capacity, whereas you are using 100% in a dream. However, this does not account for why there is another 20x slow-down in the second level of a dream – there can be no further increase in the use of brain capacity.
• Incorrectly regarded as goofs: It is established that the sensation of falling triggers the sleeper to wake up (i.e. tripping the chair wakes the sleeper before hitting the ground). However, neither the van rolling over nor the van dropping from the bridge (nor the sensation of zero gravity in dream level 2) wakes the sleepers. This is because the sleepers were dreaming within their dreams, and had to get a kick from the lowest-level dream first to realize the upper-level kick.
• Errors made by characters (possibly deliberate errors by the filmmakers): Dom slipped the sedative into Fischer’s drink on the plane. But since the stewardess was in on the plot, she could have slipped it in before with much less chance of detection.
• Plot holes: It is established that the time on the dream (or level) moves quicker than the time at the dreamer level. But the music played at the dreamer level (as a warning for wakening) should be listened much slower at the dream level, which does not occur. The music is listened at the same speed.
• Revealing mistakes: When Saito uses his teeth to pull the safety pin from a fragmentation grenade (extremely difficult to do in reality) the safety level (also known as the “spoon”) does not fly off and remains in place even after the grenade is thrown several feet into the opening of a vent.
• Factual errors: The characters dream while on a 10 hour flight from Sydney to Los Angeles on a Boeing 747; in reality, a 747 flight from Sydney to LAX takes at least 13.5 hours.
• Revealing mistakes: When Fischer opens the vault door after recovering from limbo the code he punches ends with digit 9 instead of 1 (528491).
• Continuity: Within the scene in which Saito asks Cobb to perform inception in the helicopter, Cobb exits the helicopter first and then Arthur. However, the cut immediately following shows Arthur in front of Cobb as they walk out.
• Incorrectly regarded as goofs: When the bus on the bridge hits the guardrail, they continue flying horizontally for some time, but the passengers immediately lose gravity. This is correct: weightlessness is caused by acceleration, not by speed. Falling is a vertical acceleration, and gravity will immediately cause the bus to fall as soon as it is no longer supported by the bridge.

New PlayStation 3 Update Removes Linux Support

Sony giveth and Sony taketh away: When the company’s newest PlayStation 3 firmware update drops on April 1, it’ll remove a beloved feature once trumpeted as a system sale-maker. That’s right Linux wonks, it’s time to kiss the PS3′s “Install Other OS” option goodbye.

Unlike Microsoft’s Xbox 360 or Nintendo’s Wii, the PS3 shipped with an option to run “other” operating systems, including popular Linux distributions from Debian, Fedora, OpenSUSE and Ubuntu. The “slim” model PS3 (CEH-2000) that appeared in September 2009 debuted without this feature, but Sony exempted older “fat” PS3s.

Until next Thursday, that is. When Sony’s PS3 firmware update 3.21 debuts on April 1, it’ll disable the “Install Other OS” feature on millions of older systems. While you don’t have to install the update, opting out will bar access to the PlayStation Network, newer games and Blu-ray movies, copyright-protected videos streamed from a media server, and any other new features in firmware version 3.21 forward.

Sony’s spin goes something like this: By removing the feature, the company says it “will help ensure that PS3 owners will continue to have access to the broad range of gaming and entertainment content from SCE and its content partners on a more secure system.”

Translation: You get something you already have (“access to [a] broad range of gaming” etc.) in trade for nothing, while Sony gets to close what it now deems a hacker loophole. What’s good for Sony is good for you, in other words.

Except when it’s not (good for you, that is). Running Linux on the PS3 allows amateur developers to tinker with the PS3′s Cell processor, Sony sanctioned, and cobble together home-baked utilities and games. It’s also been used by researchers to build “discount supercomputers” to run scientific simulations that might otherwise “cost thousands of dollars.” North Carolina State University professor Frank Mueller called it “$50,000 worth of computer power for a mere $5000.”

The majority reaction on Sony’s PlayStation blog won’t surprise anyone.

“Wait…you are REMOVING a feature?” writes one user. “What’s next? Removing BC from early PS3 adopters? Terrible update sony, teeeerrible,” writes one user.

“This is an idiotic idea,” says another. “I paid for this feature. When the console was $500 I paid for this feature. And Yes, I use this feature.”

“Hey Sony, considering you are disabling half of my product (It was explicitly sold with labeling ON THE BOX that states it supports other OS installations) – Can I get half my money back?” asks a third, adding that the move is “like selling someone a table, and then breaking 2 of the legs off.”

Access to the system via Linux isn’t carte blanche. Sony locks out its powerful Nvidia-developed RSX graphics processor by using a hypervisor–a “virtual machine monitor” that runs the guest operating system in a secure virtualized memory space.

In January, a US hacker known for unlocking the Apple iPhone told the BBC he’d managed to crack the PS3, admitting his workaround would allow players to run pirated games as well as older PS2 software. It’s not clear whether the January hack led to Sony’s decision to scrap Linux support, but I’d say the timing’s definitely suggestive.

In case you’re wondering, Sony says this isn’t an April Fool’s joke. Contrast with betters like “PS3 Leap-Year-Glitch Fix Resets Space-Time Continuum,” or “Nude Kratos Toggle in God of War III Update.”

My condolences, PS3-Linux wonks. Niche user base or no, it’s usually bad news when a company starts pulling features from its product portfolio.

“It only does everything”? Time to re-think that ad campaign, Sony.

Chris Roper,Executive Editor of IGN PlayStation team gets Laid Off

Chris Roper, the long time IGN Editor, Executive Editor of PlayStation team, and host of IGN Podcast Beyond who recently reviewed God of War 3 was laid off. He confirmed it via his twitter account.

Job listings keep telling me to resume. Resume what? Working? Yes, please let me resume that in some way. But how do I “submit” resuming?

The news came soon after Garnett Lee losing his job at 1up.

IGN hasn’t made any formal announcement regarding Chris Roper.

Prison Break stars Wentworth Miller, Dominic Purcell, Amaury Nolasco and Sarah Wayne Callies promote season 4 of their drama during the 2008 FOX programming presentation at Central Park’s Trump Wollman Skating Rink in New York City on Thursday.

As reported earlier this week, Michael Rapaport joined Prison Break as a series regular, playing a government agent who has an interesting offer for Michael Scofield (Miller) and his brother (Purcell).

Matt Olmstead - executive producer of “Prison Break”, says this and more in an interview, read:

Dr. Sara Tancredi (played by: Sarah Wayne Callies)— whose rather ugly contract dispute with producers led to her apparent decapitation last October — is returning next season. Full-time. As Dr. Sara Tancredi. Head and all. Seriously.

How? Why? When? What?! All legitimate questions. Good thing I just hung up with Mr. Answer Man (aka executive producer Matt Olmstead).

So… I take it that wasn’t Sara’s head in that box….
Matt Olmstead: Yeah, that wasn’t.

But initially it was supposed to be her head. What changed?
Olmstead: What changed was…. once we realized that the emotional hook of Season 3 was going to be the death of Sara, when we didn’t get the actress to do it, as soon as we wrote it and shot it, we realized that there was actually a way she could still be alive. Lincoln glanced at the head in the box for a split second. That could’ve been anyone. He wasn’t about to pull it up from the hair and inspect it closely. And then we were fairly careful thereafter of references we made to that and who took credit for it and what was seen or heard, and we left it fairly [vague]. But initially when we realized that we never actually saw the character get killed, we just had that knowledge in our back pocket and moved forward with the narrative as we intended. Which was: she’s out of the picture, Michael’s [feeling guilty] and Lincoln is freaking out because if they did that to her, they could do that to his son. It really gave us a real push for the season.

Don’t you think that was a little unfair to the audience — particularly fans of Dr. Sara — to jerk them around like this? They had every reason to believe she was dead.
Olmstead: I don’t think it was unfair, because it gave us some real juice storytelling-wise — it put teeth in the antagonists. Obviously they were now capable of killing somebody. It also gave us a couple of episodes where Lincoln withheld the information from Michael, and that gave us conflict with the brothers. But also, what were we really going to do? Were we going to see Sarah Wayne Callies tied to a chair for 13 episodes? And then if she broke free, what is she really doing? It was almost a disservice to that character to keep her around last season. Certainly, we could have put her on a cruise ship and she’s off sailing away. But we felt that if we’re going to lose that character, why not get the most drama out of it? We didn’t look at it in terms of [us] trying to tell the audience to go, you know, do something to themselves.

What role did the fan response to Dr. Sara’s death play in her return?
Olmstead: It factored in. It was kind of a confluence of events. We saw on the message boards that a lot of fans were wondering if she really was dead. And then that led to conversations of, “Well, what if she isn’t?” But then we put that on the back burner and moved forward with what we had to do, because it wasn’t anything that could be dealt with right then. And then when we came back after the strike and we realized that we were not going to finish Season 3… we creatively decided to blow it all out, jump forward in the timeline and get a fresh start. And so, when we pitched that, a lot of those elements remained, but we were still looking for that emotional core for Michael. We were kind of exactly where we were in the beginning of Season 3, which led to her demise, quote unquote. So we went back and revisited [the idea of bringing her back to life]. And once we started talking about it, it was mentioned again that fans are still wondering about her. And when people who are fans of the show — and of Sarah — are asking, “Is she really dead?”, what they’re saying, essentially, is, “I hope she’s not dead.” And then it became a kind of groundswell.

But then you have to get the actress to agree to return, which I assume was no easy task given the bad blood that seemed to exist last season.
Olmstead: There wasn’t bad blood on our side. It was a business decision. I understood where she was coming from in that she was given a provisional assurance that she was going to be a part of Season 3, but we had to revisit Season 3 a couple of times in the pitch stage in order to get it picked up. Fox was still looking for that emotional hook. Once we came up with the idea of her character going away, that gave us what we needed to push things over the edge. And although we were comfortable with it, she wasn’t. I also understand on a personal level how it factored in. She was pregnant at the time and looking forward to giving birth, and this wasn’t something she was interested in doing.

What changed for her that she’s willing to come back now?
Olmstead: She and I spoke a couple of days ago at length about what we have come up with creatively for her character…. We’re jumping ahead a little bit in the timeline. There’s a little bit of a mystery period for all of these characters in terms of how they got where they are and what happened to them. And we have some interesting things for her, and she responded to them creatively. We won’t just be picking up where we left off with her character. And she won’t be a damsel in distress waiting for her hero to return. There are some complicating factors involved with her character and things that she’s looking forward to. So we spoke about it, she thought about it, and we made a deal.

No hard feelings, then? Everyone’s moving on?
Olmstead: Moving on. She’s a very smart lady, and we’re all adults here. It was never personal. It was a business and creative decision, and we’re absolutely moving on.

Can you say how she’ll be reintroduced next season?
Olmstead: It’s going to be about figuring out what happened to her during that mystery period [between the end of Season 3 and the start of Season 4], and how she and Michael deal with it.

How much time will have lapsed?
Olmstead: About a month. Enough to jump past expected events that we left hanging at the end of Season 3, answering those things, but also moving forward.

And Sarah is onboard for the entire season?
Olmstead: Yes.

Nick Santora - writer and co-executive producer of “Prison Break”, announces that on his MySpace Page, he says:

“So we got word on Wednesday that we are officially picked up by the network for Season 4. This is great news. We are all very excited. We are moving offices onto the Fox Studio Lot next week …”

Also in an interview with Radio1 (UK) on March 17, 2008, Wentworth Miller stated that he and the principal cast are signed up for 7 seasons of the show. However, he also stated that he wouldn’t mind if the series came to its end before the seventh season.

Season 4 has not been officially announced by FOX, but the cast and crew of Prison Break seem very sure that it will be picked up in the later Spring of 2008. Dominic Purcell guarantees it. In addition, During a visit to Israel, to launch the ‘Yes’ HD channel, on March 11, 2008, Wentworth Miller confirmed that there will be a fourth season, and that filming begins in late March. He also said that the new season will air in September, shortly after the Olympics.

There was no clear remark about Sara’s death, also why didn’t they cut LJ’s head off instead ?!

They need Michael for a big case later and that will be traded by Sara ..
So another troubles for another season.

Even Kellerman in the 2nd season may be still alive too cuz he suddenly disappeared, I think he may show up again.

There was supposed to have another episode for this season (#14) which was titled as “The Messenger“, u can check that on wikipedia old-article (here), if u check the current version (here) of the same page u’ll get it removed … I know why !!

They already wrote and produced 13 episodes (I said this in a previous post, and again this is usual when producers and writers being satisfied about the 1st episode ( titled Pilot ) of a season they signed contracts to finish the half of it which is 13 episodes) and this was done before the latest writer’s strike .. so now they have to sign for another 9, 10, or 11 episodes to complete this season, or simply shift the beats to a new one, but they clinched that and ended the season with 13 … check this encounter with Lincoln (Dominic Purecell) on youtube (part1, part2) after the last episode, he said they ended the season with 13 episodes and there will be a 4th season later inshallah.

I saw it yesterday, It was hilarious, I think it’s the best video game adaptation movie I’ve ever seen.

I don’t know how much effort taken to convert Timothy Olyphant into Agent 47 after playing such a geek in Die Hard 4.0 … I think he really captured the character very perfectly. He must have finished playing the whole game series, actually he simulated every thing in the character and for those who played (enjoyed) the video game they will clearly notice that … he was able to walk and behave exactly the same as in the video game even the forehead wrinkles were included too.

I would see it again and again, the action scenes look awesome and well-organized, the sword combat in the train tunnel was very reasonable, even the slow motion cuts were wisely chosen too. the director didn’t use super special effect but the “dandarah” all the Time played very well. I like it when he went to Turkey to eliminate Belicoff’s brother and made a freaking gun battle there.

The film was shot in 60 days.

Post production took almost a year. The film was edited on an Avid, with an HD cut also maintained in Final Cut Pro The 3D was made using Maya, XSI, and Lightwave The 2D composites were made with Shake, Inferno, Fusion, and Combustion. The filmmakers prefer Macintosh, but large portions of the movie were made under Linux. Asset management was handled by custom software written in the Panorama development environment, made by Provue. Color management was handled by Truelight software. The film was scanned on a northlight scanner and was recorded on the arrilaser. Most of the film was shot at high speed, between 50 and 150fps. Normal film is at 24fps. The film was transferred to HD SR tape and quicktime, and HD quicktimes were the basis for the HD preview cuts. The working resolution for the film was 2K, at a working aspect ratio of 2.11:1 and a projected aspect ratio of 2.39:1.

The film was shot on blue and green screen in Montreal.

There are 1,523 cuts in the film, with 1,006 visual effects shots.

The work was photographed completely in Montreal, with the exception of two days of insert shooting in Los Angeles.

Ten visual effects vendors contributed to the film, spread over three continents.

The filmmakers used bluescreen 90% of the time, and greenscreen for 10%. They chose blue because it better matched the lighting paradigm (green would have been too bright) and because red garments (a la spartan capes) look better when shot over blue.

There were two days of location shooting, which were for the horses that were shot for the ‘approaching Sparta’ scene.

The script demanded that most of the male cast spend the majority of their screen time bare-chested, as per Frank Miller’s original graphic novel. Therefore, in order to adequately present themselves as the most well-trained and marshalled fighting force of the time, the entire principal cast underwent a rigorous and varied training regime for 6 weeks prior to shooting.

Sienna Miller and Silvia Colloca were each considered for the role of Queen Gorgo.

Footage from the film was shown at the July 2006 Comic-Con Convention in San Diego. Viewers were so impressed by the clip that they requested to view it three times.

The makers showed a 90-second test of the movie to Alan Horn and Jeff Robinov, the executives from Warner Brothers, who then greenlit the project.

The song that can be heard in the various trailers is Nine Inch Nails’ “Just like you imagined” from their 1999 double album “The Fragile” (Halo 14, Left CD, Track 7)

Shortly after its release, Iranian bloggers and journalists were outraged by the movie. With headlines like “Hollywood Declares War on Iranians”, they chastised the movie for it’s monstrous portrayal of the Ancient Persians, ancestors of modern Iranians. A cultural adviser to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called it, “American psychological warfare against Iran.” Thus far, no mention has been made of the opening or closing scenes, which reveal that the Persian’s portrayal is a result of the story being told from a Spartan’s point of view, rather than an omnipotent, contemporary viewpoint.

“We will fight under shadow” is also used by Greeks today as emblems on soldier uniforms. The Greek ancient phrase used is “Ypo Skii.

Warner Bros. originally pushed Zack Snyder to direct this film with a PG-13 rating as the goal. Snyder refused and ultimately the WB brass agreed to make an R-rated movie.

Queen Gorgo had, indeed, said the line: “Because only Spartan women give birth to real men” but not to the Persian messenger. According to the Greek historian Plutarch (in book III of his Moralia, called “Sayings of the Spartans”) she said this phrase to an Athenian lady who asked her “why can Spartan women speak amongst men”.

Leonidas’s individual body count numbers 33 Persians, 1 Persian messenger and 1 wolf. This number does not include Persians that King Leonidas shielded off during battle sequences.

When the narrator describes the Persian confusion with the troops at the rear wishing to advance and those in the front line wishing to retreat, he uses lines from the poem “Horatius” by Thomas Babington Macaulay, written in the 19th Century about a small Roman force which held a narrow bridge against a much larger army. From the poem: “Was none who would be foremost to lead such dire attack: But those behind cried ‘Forward!’, and those before cried ‘Back!’”

The quote, “Then we will fight in the shade,” is an actual one from history, spoken by the Spartan warrior Dienekes when warned about the enemies’ arrows.

The flowing effect of the Oracle dancing scene was accomplished by filming the actress under water.

The word ‘Sparta’ and its derivatives (mostly the term Spartans) are used a total of 72 times. This means the word Sparta is used at least .62 times per minute.

Zack Snyder’s son plays young Leonidas in the child fight training scene.

The line “Come back with your shield, or on it” was a common phrase said by Spartan women to their sons and husbands. It was common Spartan practice to bear the dead soldiers on their shields.

According to an interview with IGN.com, Director Zack Snyder says that fighting styles and formations (particularly the Spartan’s phalanx) were purposefully changed – making them historically inaccurate – so they’d “look cool” and work better for movie purposes.

The movie never claims to be historically correct. It is based heavily on Frank Miller’s 1998 comic book mini-series. Changes from history were made by Miller and Snyder so as to appeal to a wider audience and create a more exciting and visually stunning action movie, rather than a typical historical epic.

Frank Miller was inspired by the original Battle of Thermopylae after viewing the 1962 film The 300 Spartans (1962) as a child. His perception of the ‘hero’ concept changed greatly after seeing the Spartans make their sacrifice.

The actor who plays Leonidas’ father in the film (Tim Connolly) was also Gerard Butler’s stunt double for the film.

Some weapons used in 300 are actually weapons from previous war epics like “Alexander” and “Troy.” They were used in this film to cut costs.

In calling the site of the battle “the Hot Gates”, the film uses the literal translation of the name “Thermopylae” (“hot gateway”).

The line “- Come and get them!”, said by Leonidas in response to the Persian demand for the Spartans to surrender their weapons, is also a historical quote (according to ancient historian Herodotus), which was adopted as the motto of the Greek Army 1st Corps.

Microsoft has agreed to make changes to Vista in response to a complaint by Google alleging that Vista’s inbuilt search functionality competed unfairly with Google Desktop Search.

According to a NY Times report, Google’s complaint was made confidentially in line with rules established as part of a previous settlement over anti-competitive behaviour by Microsoft. The settlement between state prosecutors, the Justice Department and Microsoft will avert the prospect of litigation over the matter.

The changes Microsoft will make to Vista have not yet been made public.

It’s an interesting case. Microsoft has a long history of anti-competitive behaviour however in recent years the company has been a far better corporate citizen, in large part due to the terms imposed on it by previous settlements. On the surface it seems a little strange that Microsoft could be in this position; Vista’s search capabilities really do nothing more than deliver decent search functionality out of the box for Windows. Search functionality has been available in some form or another in ever version of Windows since Windows 95, the difference being that previously those search capabilities have been substandard compared to offerings from Google and Yahoo with their own respective desktop search programs. Whatever the actual details of the case may be (and we may never know) it’s a win for Google. For Microsoft, questions remain: is this simply a case of Microsoft waiting to fight another day, or is the company now seriously spooked by both the threat of anti-competitive litigation and Google? It’s certainly very un-Microsoft like to simply settle without a fight.

“Prepare for Glory”

300 is an adaptation of the graphic novel 300 by Frank Miller, itself partly inspired by another film based on the Battle of Thermopylae, The 300 Spartans.The film is directed by Zack Snyder with Frank Miller attached as an executive producer and consultant, and was shot mostly with bluescreen to duplicate the imagery of the original comic book.
Spartan King Leonidas (Gerard Butler) and 300 Spartans fight to the last man against Persian King Xerxes (Rodrigo Santoro) and his army of over one million soldiers, while in Sparta, Queen Gorgo (Lena Headey) attempts to rally support for her husband. The story is framed by a voice-over narrative by the Spartan soldier Dilios (David Wenham). Through this narrative technique, all manner of fantastical creatures are introduced, placing 300 within the genre of historical fantasy.

With this change, Yahoo leapfrogs Gmail (2.8 GB and growing) and Live.com Mail (2GB).  “Escape is just the Beginning”

 MICHAEL SCOFIELD (Wentworth Miller) is a desperate man in a desperate situation.
