To launch the high quality TV channel TNT in Belgium, the crew placed a big red push button right in the middle of street in an average Flemish town. Above that button is a big arrow that says, “Push To Add Drama.” and they invited people to use the button, and then they waited.

Microsoft 8 New Logo Made on a Mac

Following to the officially confirmed Microsoft Windows 8 New logo, and some humor around, I have discovered that its actually made on a Mac. By digging inside the metadata for the original logo, the above image, also located on Microsoft Blog here.

Microsoft's Tellme vs Apple's Siri

Microsoft’s chief strategy and research officer Craig Mundie talked to Forbes about the company’s kinect and when asked about Siri, he said that Siri was nothing special, and Microsoft’s own voice capabilities have been around for over a year. Siri is all about good marketing nothing else:

People are infatuated with Apple announcing it. It’s good marketing, but at least as the technological capability you could argue that Microsoft has had a similar capability in Windows Phones for more than a year, since Windows Phone 7 was introduced.

This is what Microsoft execs usually say when challenged with a tech by their competitors:

you can pick ‘em up and say ‘text Eric’ and say what you wanna say and it transcribes it. You can query anything through Bing by just saying the words. I mean, all that’s already there. Fully functional, been there for a year.

This is not the first time, we all know when Steve Ballmer slammed the original iPhone back in 2007 and touted it as being overpriced and not appealing to business for the lack of a keyboard.

HP Chairman is a MAC User

A few days ago, Retures published an interview with HP executive chairman Ray Lane where he, as the photo above shows, was busy using a Mac. This is not the first time for Apple competitors caught using MAC devices in the public.

Another example for such thing, during a Microsoft Store opening in McLean, Virginia. As noted by CultofMac, the DJ brought to entertain the crowd was using a MacBook Pro cover by Microsoft sticker. Check out the photo below

Samsung has dropped a new ad for their Galaxy SII touting the device larger screen and 4G speeds and bashing Apple fans who stand in line for the latest iPhone for days without knowing there is something better. Samsung caught again copying Apple

Official Samsung website for Galaxy Player 50 has a slightly modified version of the Apple iOS Maps app, directly taken from a 2008 screenshot of iPhone Maps app. Apparently, Samsung doesn’t know (or care) that although the Apple’s Maps app uses Google maps data, the user interface is designed and copyrighted by Apple since 2007.

This isn’t the first time a rival to Apple has used their artwork. Recently we’ve had Samsung using icons from Apple’s App Store in the backdrop of their in-store displays, a move which once again led to much embarrassment for the firm fighting a legal battle claiming they’re copying Apple’s iPhone and iPad.

Clayton Miller’s Interuserface takes a look at the iconic shapes behind today’s biggest mobile companies, and while Apple, iPhone, and iPad are obviously roundrects (rounded rectangles), their competition is just as geometrically aligned:

Microsoft’s Metro UI owns the square. Apple has a corner on the roundrect, from the Springboard launcher to the iPhone hardware itself. Nokia, despite its late entry with MeeGo’s Harmattan UI, found the squircle unclaimed and ran with it beautifully. Palm has used the circle from the early days of PalmOS, and in WebOS, HP continues the tradition with care (one might even note that both Palm and HP structure their wordmarks around the circle).

The power of shapes:

Like color, which also despite limitless associations has a history of strong associations within a market, shape is a powerful, yet subtle differentiator. Owning a shape isn’t easy – by itself, as demonstrated by Samsung and RIM, a shape is hardly potent. Those who have successfully laid claim to a shape have used it as a building block rather than as window dressing. Use the power of shape to reinforce good design with coherence and identity – and that shape may one day be yours.

Zune, obviously, couldn’t hold the squircle, and neither Bada nor RIM could take the square or roundrect as their own. Interestingly, Google’s Android has no iconic hold on any simple shape (nor do Facebook or Amazon for that matter, who have elected to stick with letters).

For the 10th anniversary of the opening of the first Apple retail location, Apple didn’t only introduce the iPad as an interactive sign but with a rummy poster? Not really, Apple has celebrated the 10th anniversary with a cool poster full of interesting tidbits showing that Apple “have learned a lot”. Here is a few of them and you can see the poster and read the full transcript below:

• For the granite in Apple Stores, Apple uses a blow torch to make it reveal its true color.
• Apple built a full-scale face of the Regent Street Apple Store in Cupertino’s parking lot to make sure the design looked right.
• Musicians have recorded albums in the Apple Store that have topped the sales charts.
• Apple closed an entire street in Sydney to bring in the three-story glass panels used to make the Sydney Apple Store.
• Apple once experimented with making their retail stores smell like pine trees or tomatoes to make them more inviting, but ultimately abandoned the practice.

Here is the full transcript:

In the last 10 years, we’ve learned a lot. We’ve learned to treat every day with the same enthusiasm we had on the first day. We’ve learned the importance of giving our customers just as much attention as they give us. And we’ve learned the art of hiring the right people for the right positions. We’ve learned it’s better to adapt to the neighborhood rather than expecting the neighborhood to adapt to us. Which is why we spend so much time and energy building stores the way we do. Our first store, in Tysons Corner, taught us our first lesson  within the first 30 minutes. We had just opened the doors when we noticed the steel already needed polishing. With a special polishing solution. And a special polishing tool. That’s when we learned that blasting steel with virgin sand makes it less prone to scuff marks. We’ve also learned that glass can be much more than just glass. We’ve learned that a 32’6” transparent glass box can stand tall even among the giants of the Manhattan skyline. That when glass becomes as iconic as the Fifth Avenue Cube, it can also become the fifth most  photographed landmark in New York City. And we’ve learned that if you have to, you can close an entire street in Sydney to bring in three-story panes of glass. And when you create three-story glass, you also have to create a rig that can install three-story glass. We’ve even figured out how to make the world’s largest pieces of curved glass for one of our stores in Shanghai. We’ve also learned more than a few things about stone. Like how to reveal granite’s true color with a blowtorch. And that sometimes granite has veins of color that have to be matched. We’ve also learned that getting these details perfect can feel like trying to move a mountain. Sometimes two. But in the end, the effort is worth it. Because steel, glass, and stone can combine to create truly unique and inspiring spaces. We also understand that finding the right design for our stores is critical. We even built a full-scale facade of the Regent Street store in a Cupertino parking lot to be sure the design was right. Which taught us the value of seeing things full size. We once had a notion that ministores would offer the ultimate in convenience. Then we built one. Which showed us that bigger can actually be better. And we’ve learned that even when our stores are big, no detail is too small. This is something we learned all over again when we restored the Paris Opera store down to the last of its more than 500,000 tiles. We’ve also learned that our customers like open spaces, glass staircases, and handcrafted oak tables. And that those spaces don’t need to smell like pine trees or tomatoes to make then inviting. We’re constantly working to make our stores more artful, more iconic, and more innovative. And we’re awfully proud of every single one. We’re proud of our stores not just because they’re successful, but because of everything they’ve taught us. Along the way Apple Stores have made Apple stronger as a company. Over the past 10 years, we’ve learned that our stores are the embodiment of the Apple brand for our customers. Now, our customers just happen to be the entire reason we’re here, so let’s dedicate a few words to them. Around the time we opened the store in Tysons Corner in 2001, everyone else was trying to talk to their customers less. Which made us think that maybe we should talk to them more. Face-to-face if possible. So we’ve found ways to strike up a conversation at every possible opportunity. We talk while they play with the products on the tables. And when they join us for a workshop. These conversation have taught us that customers love our products, but what they really want is to make a scrapbook out of family photos. They want to make a movie about their kid. Or a website about traveling across the country. Which has taught us that Apple Stores can and should be centers for creativity. And we’ve figured out through programs like Apple Camp and Youth Workshops that creativity doesn’t care about age. The movies and the slideshows we’ve seen kids make are proof that all you need are the right tools and an idea. And we must be doing something right, because the kids’ smiles are just as big as ours. We’ve also learned that musicians can record an album in our stores that goes to the top of the charts. And that award-winning film directors are interested not just in our computers but in our workshops. We’ve learned a lot about having fun. And we’ve learned our customers like to use our products for business too. Experience has taught us that having one Pro Day per week dedicated to business customers isn’t enough. That we need to be open for business every day. And have space devoted to business training sessions, workshops, and events. We’ve learned that every staff member should be just as fluent in the needs of a business customer as the needs of any other customer. Our millions of conversations with customers of every stripe have taught us it’s not about making people feel like a computer or phone loves them. That’s impossible. Instead, it’s about giving people the tools to do what they love. And we’ve learned how to create amazing programs like One to One and Personal Setup to give people those tools. We created programs like these to replace fear with confidence. Because our customers have shown us that the ownership experience is even more important than the sale. We learned all this by asking questions. And genuinely listening to the answers. And to be sure we’re hearing everything, we’ve learned to converse in 36 languages, and a few local dialects as well. We’ve even learned a few cultural things. The proper use of the word y’all, for example. And our Japanese customers once taught us that their superheroes don’t wear capes. Which also taught us to see feedback as a gift. We’ve learned that a visit to the Genius Bar can fix more than just computers. It can also restore a customer’s relationship with Apple. And that we don’t need a minifridge stocked with free water to get people to talk to a Genius. Knowing they can get exactly the right answer when something isn’t working is enough. We even figured out how to shorten the time an in-store repair takes from seven days to one day. Our customers hold us to exceptionally high standards. So we’ve learned how to raise ours even higher. 325 store openings have taught us that a grand opening creates blocks and blocks of excitement. That people will stand in line for hours, even days, just to be among the first to walk through the front door. And to get a free T-shirt. Speaking of T-shirts, we’ve learned more than you can imagine about our own. We’ve found that when we wear black T-shirts, we blend in. And when we wear too many colors it’s confusing. But blue shirts are just right. We’ve also learned that it takes precisely 4,253 stitches to embroider the Apple logo on those blue shirts. And we even figured out which direction the stitches should go in. When it comes to product launches, we’ve learned we have to work hard to ensure supply meets demand. If not on the first day, then soon thereafter. And we’ve learned how to put our own products to use in innovative ways in our stores. We’ve created entirely new system like EasyPay to help our customers as efficiently as possible. We’ve replaced the red phone behind the Genius Bar with more expertise right in our Store. All of these experiences have made us smarter. And at the very center of all we’ve accomplished, all we’ve learned over the past 10 years, are our people. People who understand how important art is to technology. People who match, and often exceed, the excitement of our customers on days we release new products. The more than 30,000 smart, dedicated employees who work so hard to create lasting relationship with the millions who walk through our doors. Whether the task at hand is fixing computers teaching workshops, organizing inventory, designing iconic structures, inventing proprietary technology, negotiating deals, sweating the details of signage, or doing countless other things, we’ve learned to hire the best in every discipline. We now see that it’s our job to train our people and then learn from them. And we recruit employees with such different backgrounds—teachers, musicians, artists, engineers—that there’s a lot they can teach us. We’ve learned how to value a magnetic personality as much as proficiency. How to look for intelligence but give just as much weight to kindness. How to find people who want a career not a job. And we’ve found that when we hire the right people, we can lead rather than manage. We can give each person their own piece of the garden to transform. We’ve’ learned our best people often provide the best training for the next generation. We’ve also learned that due to the exceptional quality of our applicants, it can be hard to get hired at the Apple store than in Cupertino. It can sometimes take two to three years to bring someone in. Not because they aren’t right for Apple but because we want to be sure the opportunity we have to offer is right for them. Why have we learned to be so selective? So careful? Because our people are the soul of the Apple Stores. And together, our team is the strongest ever seen in retail. As beautiful and iconic as our stores may be, the people who create and staff those stores are what matters most. So on this 3,652nd day we say think you to every single one of you. We say thank you to those who were there on the first day, to those whose first day is today. The past 10 years of the Apple Store have changed Apple as a company. Our experiences, our successes, even our occasional missteps, have made us better. They’ve made Apple better. And it’s because of those experiences, and the ways they’ve change us, that we can’t wait to see what we’ll learn next. It’s been 10 years. What an amazing first step.

20th Century Fox, in a genius marketing move, has hired planes to fly around and make giant smokey X-Men X’s in the sky promoting X-Men: First Class, they know they can get comic geeks excited all around by doing so. Official Synopsis:

X-MEN FIRST CLASS charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men.

Unfortunately Apple pulled the plug on the fun last year. However, Adweek has compiled all 66 ads for your viewing pleasure. and they are ordered chronologically. Here are some of the key findings from “The Mobile Movement: Understanding Smartphone Users,” a study from Google and conducted by Ipsos OTX, an independent market research firm, among 5,013 US adult smartphone Internet users at the end of 2010:

71% of smartphone users search because of an ad they’ve seen either online or offline; 82% of smartphone users notice mobile ads, 74% of smartphone shoppers make a purchase as a result of using their smartphones to help with shopping, and 88% of those who look for local information on their smartphones take action within a day.

Google commissioned this research with the objectives to better understand how smartphones are used in consumers’ daily lives and how smartphones have influenced the ways consumers search, shop and respond to mobile advertising. Check out the video below:

Well, Stefan Esser the iPhone security expert an hacker and the guy behind iOS 4.3.1 untethered jailbreak, he has just released iOS 4.3.1 untethered jailbreak in a password protected zip file.

He tweeted:

The untether is downloadable athttp://antidote.com/untether.zip (but only if you can crack the ZIP password)

Of course you won’t be able to open the file as the password has so many characters which would be impossible to decrypt it. But this mean that it’s now ready hundred percent which expected to be released for both Windows and Mac.

Musclenerd (the Dev-team spokesperson) has just announced that they are doing normal testing across all devices + configs, before releasing the RedSn0w jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1.

@mickius we’re just doing normal testing across all devices + configs (unlocked vs. legit). Everything is on track for a Funday (USA time!)

He does say that they are on time for a ‘Funday’ and with today being Sunday that means we should see the release today.

While introducing iPad 2 last month, Apple’s chief executive Steve Jobs described the competitive market for tablet apps on Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb as having “at most 100 apps.” The actual Android catalog appears to be closer to 17. as noted by Appleinsider.

Jobs noted that the iOS App Store now has over 350,000 titles, of which 65,000 “take full advantage of the iPad,” drawing attention to “consumption apps, creation apps and fantastic games, and a lot of apps for business and vertical markets apps like medical. The things people are doing here are amazing,” Jobs said.

“That compares to our competitors, who are trying to launch these days with at most 100 apps. And I think we’re being a little generous here. This is a huge advantage we have,” Jobs added.

A review of Google’s Android Marketplace tablet offerings “featured for tablets” depicts just 50 apps, but as blogger Justin Williams notes, “most are upconverted and offer no significant advantages on a tablet other than a larger screen.”

Looking only at apps that either require Android 3.0 or have a user interface “specifically designed for a tablet experience,” Williams counted only 17.

U.S. Air Force Combat Controller Ron Walker says he dropped his iPhone 4 at the time Walker was leaning out of a US Air Force plane door while preparing for a static line jump from 1,000 feet.

Walker says he used the Find My iPhone app, and found his iPhone at the base of a tree in a forest. The phone was unscratched and worked fine, according to Walker.

The phone had a Griffin Motif case, and no other protection.

As Noted by the folks at Appleinsider Nokia used Apple’s mac to announce their precious partnership with Microsoft, here is the details:

When Nokia wanted to convince the world that it would bring consumers “stellar hardware and innovative software and great services” in its partnership with Microsoft, it turned to Apple’s Mac-only iMovie to get word out.

Following the announcement of Microsoft Nokia partnership a video posted by the company’s NokiaConversations YouTube account presents its new chief executive Steven Elop, formerly the head of Microsoft’s Office-centric Business Division, speaking about how Nokia’s new partnership with Microsoft will “create opportunities beyond anything that currently exists.”

Verizon has already brought Bing to some of its customers forcibly, erasing Google as the default option and generating a response that indicates that, perhaps, consumers don’t really want the brand that much after all. Microsoft also failed to bring Office to mobile phones as promised in its previous partnership with Nokia in 2009, when it was Elop himself representing Microsoft in the photos of executives of the two companies shaking hands.

But that’s not the only thing familiar about Nokia’s video. Adrian Boioglu, a Romanian blogger, noticed that Nokia’s soundtrack was the same used by Apple in its presentation of the new unibody MacBook Pros in 2009. But they’re not just borrowing the same catchy tune.

The song is actually Pendulum, an Apple Loop installed as part of iMovie, available for royalty free use by anyone who uses a Mac to create iMovies, at least for non-commercial use.

The license agreement for Apple’s included “loop content’ reads, “You may use the Apple and third party audio loop content (”Audio Content”), contained in or otherwise included with the Apple Software, on a royalty-free basis, to create your own original soundtracks for your video and audio projects. You may broadcast and/or distribute your own soundtracks that were created using the Audio Content, however, individual audio loops may not be commercially or otherwise distributed on a standalone basis, nor may they be repackaged in whole or in part as audio samples, sound effects or music beds.”

Oops! This isn’t the first time Microsoft has been embarrassed by the use of Macs within its efforts to sell Windows. In 2008, the company’s “I’m a PC” campaign graphics were found to have actually been made on a Mac.

SayHiToSpace.com

I don’t know what’s going on with mysterious website SayHiToSpace.com. Sure, there’s a countdown in there and even links to email and Twitter, but it’s their Youtube channel that creeps me out. Basically, the first video from SayHiToSpace went viral as it featured a creepy guy finding out that the iPad lacked a camera, then destroying it making a hole in the middle of the device with a water jet.

Here’s the first video:

A follow-up to that has been posted on Youtube, featuring the same guy — who actually sent the broken unit to Steve Jobs at Infinite Loop. To prove it, the DHL tracking number of the shipment was posted online.

As you can see on Youtube, the video description says the “iTablet” will be sold on eBay starting December 9th. I guess the piece that has been removed will be sold on eBay, meaning that the lucky winner will share a piece of the same iPad with Steve Jobs.
