Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 Released, The Fastest iOS 5 Jailbreak for Mac & Windows

Dev-Team pushed another update to Redsn0w jailbreak for iOS 5. The news came from @MuscleNerd as always via Twitter explaining that Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 for Windows and Mac is the fastest jailbreak solution for iOS 5. Total jailbreak time has been reduced to 80 seconds which was previously around 210 seconds. However, this will stretch the first time loading of Cydia after jailbreak, during which the stashing of applications will occur. An option in Redsn0w 0.9.9b7 preferences allows you  to choose whether you want redsn0w or Cydia to stash applications.

Via the official Dev-Team blog:

After some feedback on reddit, we’ve decided to make the initial jailbreak as quick as possible by no longer “stashing” the applications by default during the redsn0w run.  This reduces the time to actually perform the jailbreak from 210 seconds to 80 seconds (60 percent!).  However, you make up for much of that the first time you launch Cydia, which will then want to stash the applications.  You can choose whether you want redsn0w or Cydia to stash in the Preferences pane.

JailbreakMe.com Transferred To Cydia Founder Saurik

After joining Apple as an intern, the well known hacker @comex is no longer attached (or does he) to the iPhone hackery team. He has recently sold JailbreakMe.com domain to @ConceitedApps and since then the website is no longer safe for iPhone jailbreak or it could be used to host iPhone malware.

Today, it turns out, that Jay Freeman, a.k.a saurik is the new owner of the JailbreakMe.com domain, as the person who had initially bought it from ConceitedApps was kind enough to transfer it to Saurik.

Yesterday, we learned that jailbreakme.com was sold in July; today, I talked with the new owner: he is actually very likable and awesome. ;P

…and tonight, jailbreakme.com was transferred to me (convenient, as I host the site ;P); so, going forward, we no longer need to worry! 😀

So its good to continue with the jailbreak without worries.

New Cydia Tweak Adds Speedometer to iPhone Maps App

Numerous noteworthy Cydia tweaks out there that let customize iPhone’s user interface but few are available for the Maps stock app. Here is a new tweak in Cydia, Speed for Maps, a simple tweak that adds a speedometer overlay, very unobtrusively, in the bottom corner of the stock Maps.app

No new icon is added, but you can configure the output in the settings app. Changing between MPH, KPH, FPS, and even Knots. Speed for Maps is available free in Cydia. Go get it. This is one of the little things Apple should have thought of.
